According to Mark Binkley, a member of the technical staff at the Middletown, NJ-based facility, the new communications server will facilitate X.25 communications for AT&T's SENTRY -- an application that remotely tests telecommunications trunks (the links between switches on a telephone network). Binkley stated tat the decision to move to a LAN-based server from a host-based solution was largely motivated by cost savings. "We had been looking for something like the UconX product for some time," Binkley said. "By utilizing LAN-based X.25 servers, you can distribute X.25 communications wherever you want: close to the host, or on the LAN/WAN at any point. All you need is an IP address. The LAN-based servers allow for more cost effective fail-over of the host by not requiring redundant host-based X.25 communications modules.
AT&T of New Jersey received a trail version of the UconX server and X.25 software in March 1995, and decided to purchase in July 1995. To date, they have purchased five servers with UconX X.25 software.
The SENTRY ATTS offers voiceband and digital testing of international or domestic circuits on a routine (automated) or demand basis, as specified in CCITT Recommendation 0.22. The kinds of tests performed include level, psophometric noise, signal-to-total distortion, echo canceler tests, and digital tests.
SENTRY TAS is an advanced manual test system that assists in isolating faults to specific exchanges, central offices, or customer locations.
